The only lake in Šumava belongs to the Danube basin The lake is part of the National Nature Reserve Černé a Čertovo jezero. The valley in which the Devil’s Lake is located was carved by the devil, according to legend, because a girl he wanted to take to hell tied a large stone to his tail. To this day, goblins and strange figures are said to emerge from the lake. The lake is located at an altitude of 1030 m, its area is 9.7 ha and the lake is 36 m deep in places. The lake has two smaller tributaries and is drained by the Jezerní Brook into the Železný Brook, which is a tributary of the River Regen and then the Danube. The main European watershed runs along the ridge between Jezerní hora and Špičák between the Devil’s Lake and the Black Lake. The water from Lake Čertov therefore drains into the Black Sea, while the nearby Black Lake is drained into the North Sea. It is also interesting to note that the lake walls of both Lake Čertova and Lake Černý jezero are the only places in Šumava where avalanches occur.
